I’ve always searched for a challenge. Fueled by my desire to understand and solve problems, I’ve learn new things and challenged conventional views. I could never stand a brain dead job and always had a hard time classifying my broad skill-set. Until I learned a new word – knowledge worker.

Knowledge workers in today’s workforce are individuals who are valued for their ability to interpret information within a specific subject area. They will often advance the overall understanding of that subject through focused analysis, design and/or development. They use research skills to define problems and to identify alternatives. Fueled by their expertise and insight, they work to solve those problems, in an effort to influence company decisions, priorities and strategies.

Knowledge workers may be found across a variety of information technology roles, but also among professionals like teachers, lawyers, architects, physicians, nurses, engineers and scientists. As businesses increase their dependence on information technology, the number of fields in which knowledge workers must operate has expanded dramatically.

My skills as a knowledge worker can bring benefits to your organizations in a variety of important ways:

analyzing data to establish relationships
assessing input in order to evaluate complex or conflicting priorities
identifying and understanding trends
making connections
understanding cause and effect
ability to brainstorm, thinking broadly (divergent thinking)
ability to drill down, creating more focus (convergent thinking)
producing a new capability
creating or modifying a strategy

In contrast, these activities are something a knowledge worker would typically not be asked to perform:

transaction processing
routine tasks
simple prioritization of work

Direct Time Towards Your Ambitions and Interests

Think of time as a flowing river and rather than “managing” it, try to direct it towards your ambitions, interests and endevours. Don’t fight time, or freel stressed by it. Welcome its force and recognize that time is powerful – enbrace its longevity and strength by employing persistence and patience.

Focusing on Providing Value to Others

You have to give people a reason why they want what you have to offer. The key to marketing yourself is to effectively communicate, in an interesting way, the reason they need what you have. Maybe you’re an authority if your field; maybe you’ve painstakingly studied your area of expertise. Maybe you know something “they” don’t, but need to know to solve their problem.

Focusing on providing value to others, most of the marketing aspect takes care of itself.

See What You Want to Be

What do you see when you look into your future, because what you see is what you’re going to get. Do you see your future so bright it burns your eyes? If you do, then that’s what you’re going to get. If you see your future as mundane, then that’s exactly what you’ll get as well. What you see is what you get; I suggest you begin to see what you want to be.

Passion comes from doing what you love.

Scuba Diving @ The Great Barrier Reef

We filmed our recent diving adventure on one of Cairns’ few privately-owned & eco-friendly Great Barrier Reef Cruises: Passions of Paradise.

We decided to rent a small underwater camera instead of dealing with our waterproof-encased DSLR during our first diving experience. Did I mention that we had no pool training? We took a leap of faith straight into the depths of the ocean.

Our 30-minute dive felt like seconds, and it was difficult to concentrate on filming while maintaining composure in this, to us, unfamiliar environment.

All in all, it was an adventure – just what we were looking for.

The song we used is “You got the love” by Florence & The Machine (the XX remix).
